Dear Trusted Partner:
I am excited to tell you that the National Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity Incorporated, the Columbus, Alumni Chapter and the Columbus Kappa Foundation (Fatherhood Matters Program) in conjunction with the Baby 1st Network and the Mount Herman Missionary Baptist Church, is organizing a city-wide outreach effort called SIDS Risk Reduction Sunday, which aims to educate community members about safe infant sleep and reducing the risk of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) and other sleep-related causes of infant death in Ohio.
I would like to invite you to join us, community leaders and other religious organizations as we participate in SIDS Risk Reduction Sunday, this November 13th. Mount Herman Missionary Baptist Church, 2283 Sunbury Road, Columbus, Ohio 43219, will be hosting a Community Health Forum at 2:00 p.m. (tbd) in an effort to increase the awareness of the impact infant mortality is having on Columbus’s African American population. Dr. Augustus Parker will be the master of ceremony along with members from Kappa’s National organization and Dr. Arthur James addressing the event and providing important information regarding Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS).
SIDS is the leading cause of death for babies under 1 year of age. For the entire month of November, the Kappa Alpha Psi Safe Infant Sleep Initiative will be conducting expanded outreach efforts in states that have the highest rates of SIDS. Ohio is one of those states. Since the Safe to Sleep® campaign was launched by the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, more than 20 years ago, the national SIDS rate has declined dramatically. Tragically, African American babies are still twice as likely to die of SIDS babies of other races. This is a statistic we don’t have to live with and we’d like your help reducing the risk of sleep-related infant deaths in Ohio.
Please share this information with your networks and let’s make this a unforgettable event and all join hands to save our babies.
Thank you in advance for your efforts in helping us reduce infant death in Columbus, Franklin County and Ohio.
