The New Year has arrived and it holds promises for opportunities in employment and training, specifically in construction!
Poindexter IIA is currently in the procurement stage for major subs, which should lead to job opportunities in several phases including this Spring (mechanical, electrical, plumbing, concrete, masonry); Summer to Fall (framing, roofing, siding, landscaping); and Winter (painting, finish carpentry, doors, frames, hardware, janitorial) but the hiring will be done even earlier. Referrals are being made now for sitework laborers and equipment operators.
Poindexter IIA and IIB is the new construction of multi-family rental housing on a portion of the site once known as Poindexter Village, located in the Near East Side neighborhood of Columbus. The work to be performed is subject to Section 3 HUD requirements that employment and training opportunities be directed to low and very low-income persons to the greatest extent possible. Poindexter IIA and IIB construction will overlap with IIB, which will most likely begin during the first quarter of 2016.
As each new contractor comes on board, they will be required to identify their staffing needs. Thirty percent of all new hires are required to be individuals certified as Section 3. It is difficult to judge how many jobs will be made available and how many applicants will be ready for hire. However, our commitment is to fill every vacancy with a job ready applicant and for those individuals that do not have job ready skills, provide them with a training opportunity that will lead to employment in the construction industry.
Attached is a Section 3 Employment and Training Referral Form that can be used by individuals interested in a construction-related job on the Poindexter IIA and IIB projects. Completed forms can be submitted by fax, email, or postal mail.
While there are many job training opportunities in the area, it should be noted that Columbus State Community College is offering for the first time a FastPath Construction Skills training program, which will begin on February 1. The program is free and runs Monday through Friday 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for eight weeks. It is an excellent opportunity to learn entry level construction skills and get help with job placement at the same time. A prospective student must (1) be a resident of Columbus, (2) be at least 18 years old, (3) have a high school diploma or GED, and (4) complete a criminal background check and pass a drug screen.
An information session will be held on Thursday, January 7 at 9:00 a.m. in Columbus State's Center for Workforce Development. Interested students should call (614) 287-3663 to sign up. They will need to complete an academic assessment, career assessment, address barriers, and prepare a career action plan prior to acceptance in the program. For more information, visit www.cscc.edu/FASTPATH, email FastPath@cscc.edu, or call (614) 287-3663.
